Style : Audery Hepburn and 5 steps to follow her look
“She has a style that never goes out of style”.
A legend, a fashion icon, a supremely talented actress, a devoted mother and a philanthropist. Audery Hepburn was born in Brussels, Belgium on May 4, 1929.
She did a few films in Europe before starring on Broadway as “Gigi” in 1951. Two years later she won the Oscars for ” The Roman Holiday”, as the young princess who plays hooky from her royal duties and goes out exploring Rome with the handsome Gregory Peck. She starred with Fred Astaire in “Funny Face” as a book keeper turned model, wearing gorgeous designs by Givenchy, who continued to design for several more decades for her, and was a close friend.
Audery starred with her then husband Mel Ferrer, in “War and Peace” but is perhaps best known for her role as Holly Golightly in ” Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. As for me, I grew up with “My Fair Lady”, my father’s favorite movie, and I probably still know most of the lyrics!
She appeared in a few films after she married her second husband Andrea Dotti and spent a large part of her time in Rome, with her family. Her last film was a cameo as an angel in “Always” a Spielberg film. The later years of her life was were spent as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, raising awareness for children in need. She died on Jan 20 1993,losing her battle to cancer, prior to accepting the Humanitarian award the the Academy gave her. Her sons carry on the work for her children’s fund.
When I think of Audery I think of gamine, grace, beauty, the LBD, the pixie cut, cats eye sunglasses, pearls, scarves, a perfectly groomed look and timeless style!
Here are 5 things that I think a woman should learn from her.
1. Get a tailored Black dress, best suited for your body type, Audery believed in accentuating your best attribute, she could not match most actresses in that era who were, lets say ‘well endowed’, but she sure showed off that tiny waist!
2. Don’t chase trends, spend your money to buy something classy that will stay forever. Money spent on a plain fitted white shirt (I think that hold true for a great pair of Jeans too) will see you through many seasons as compared to an expensive party dress.
3.Accessorize..this is where trends can be just fine to a degree ( bags/sunglasses ), but the classics never fade, pearls, and as her son was quoted saying in an interview, “her vice was scarves”.
4.Groom yourself to the best of your ability, and have a good posture. We are not all dancers, but we can surely try and not hunch and stoop!
5.“I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles.”
― Audrey Hepburn
She could be on the cover of any fashion magazine 20 years from now and still fit in!
